We recently completed what may be the largest residential concrete resurfacing project in Texas: more than 20,000 square feet of existing concrete transformed on a private ranch near Killeen, just outside the Austin area. To put that in perspective, a typical Gem-Scape™ resurfacing project takes two to four days. This one required nearly a full month of production and four dedicated crews working together.
For us, it was more than another job. It was a chance to show what is possible when proven systems, experienced craftsmen, and thoughtful design come together at a truly massive scale, without tearing out a single slab of the existing concrete.
Key Takeaways
- Scale: More than 20,000 square feet of decorative concrete resurfacing, one of the largest residential projects of its kind in Texas.
- Speed: Completed in roughly four weeks with four dedicated crews, a fraction of the time full demolition would have taken.
- No Demolition: The existing concrete foundation stayed in place; only the surface was transformed.
- Custom Design: A modern linear pattern with a dark border, designed specifically for the property.
Why the Homeowner Chose Resurfacing Over Replacement
When most people look at aging concrete, they assume demolition is the only option. For a project this size, that would have meant removing, hauling away, and replacing thousands upon thousands of square feet of concrete, an enormously disruptive, expensive, and slow undertaking.
Instead, the homeowner chose Gem-Scape, our proprietary resurfacing system that transforms existing concrete into a beautiful decorative surface without the mess and cost of full replacement. The result was a complete visual transformation while the original concrete foundation stayed exactly where it was. For large properties especially, the advantages add up quickly: less demolition, less waste, less disruption, faster completion, and a dramatic improvement in appearance.
A Custom Design Built for the Ranch
One of the most impressive parts of this project was the custom design developed by outdoor living designer Lee Wooden. Rather than a standard pattern, Lee created a modern linear design accented with a darker border that frames the space and creates movement across the property.
The challenge was maintaining consistency across more than 20,000 square feet while still feeling custom and intentional. The dark border gives the space definition, and the clean linear cuts deliver a sophisticated look that matches the scale and beauty of the ranch. From ground level, the craftsmanship is clear. From above, the sheer size becomes almost impossible to ignore.
Four Crews Working as One Team
Large projects are rarely won on craftsmanship alone. They take planning, communication, logistics, and execution. We assigned four dedicated production crews to the ranch, coordinating every phase: surface preparation, repairs, overlay installation, pattern layout, detailing, shading, sealing, and final inspections.
It took extensive scheduling to keep quality consistent from one section to the next. Even so, the homeowner was pleasantly surprised by how efficiently things moved. What could easily have become a months-long construction project was finished in about four weeks through careful planning.
A Testament to Experience
While Zion Outdoors is a relatively young company, the experience behind it runs much deeper. Our co-founder, Jordan Winar, has participated in more than 25,000 outdoor living projects throughout his career and has spent over a decade helping homeowners transform concrete, patios, pool decks, driveways, and outdoor living spaces.
That experience matters most on projects where there is little room for error. Across 20,000-plus square feet, consistency, process, and attention to detail are everything, and every crew member has to understand how their work affects the finished result.
