Why Nearly 30,000 Projects Matter More Than Any Marketing Claim
By Jordan Winar & Lael Bryant, Co-Founders of Zion Outdoors
When we started Zion Outdoors, we never imagined that one day we would celebrate 500 five-star reviews from homeowners across Texas.
Like many business owners, we thought success would be measured by revenue, awards, or the number of projects completed.
Those things matter.
But after decades in decorative concrete and nearly 30,000 projects throughout our careers, we’ve learned something far more valuable.
The greatest measure of success isn’t how many projects you build.
It’s how many homeowners are willing to recommend you after you’ve left.
That is why reaching 500 five-star reviews means so much to our team.
It represents thousands of conversations, thousands of decisions, thousands of quality inspections, and thousands of opportunities to earn trust.
More importantly, it represents 500 families who believed our company delivered an experience worth sharing.
As we reflected on this milestone, we realized something else.
The lessons we’ve learned from experience on nearly 30,000 hardscape projects may be just as valuable to homeowners as the surfaces we’ve installed.
This article shares many of those lessons.
Experience Is the Greatest Material on Any Jobsite
People often ask us what makes one concrete resurfacing contractor different from another.
Some assume it’s the products.
Others think it’s equipment.
Some believe it’s simply price.
The truth is much simpler.
Experience changes every decision.
Every decorative concrete project is unique.
Concrete moves differently depending on age.
Moisture behaves differently depending on drainage.
Different aggregate mixes finish differently.
Texas clay soils expand and contract.
Existing cracks tell stories.
Shade changes curing times.
Pool chemicals affect surfaces differently than driveways.
Every one of these variables influences the finished product.
Experience teaches installers how to recognize these conditions before they become expensive problems.
That experience cannot be learned from a brochure.
It comes from thousands of projects.
Concrete Resurfacing Is More Than Applying a Coating
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that concrete resurfacing is simply “painting concrete.”
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Professional decorative concrete involves evaluating:
- Structural integrity
- Surface preparation
- Existing moisture
- Expansion joints
- Bond strength
- Drainage
- Crack patterns
- Environmental exposure
- Desired texture
- Long-term maintenance expectations
Skipping any one of these steps can shorten the life of an installation dramatically.
That is why professional preparation often takes as much time as the decorative finish itself.
Why We Created Gem-Scape™
Throughout our careers we installed and evaluated countless resurfacing systems.
Some looked beautiful but lacked durability.
Others were durable but lacked natural aesthetics.
Many required complete demolition.
Many developed common issues that homeowners simply accepted as “normal.”
We believed homeowners deserved something better.
That vision eventually became Gem-Scape™.
Gem-Scape™ is Zion Outdoors’ nationally award-winning proprietary concrete resurfacing system designed to transform existing concrete into stunning natural stone-inspired finishes without unnecessary demolition.
Rather than removing usable concrete, the system allows homeowners to preserve their existing foundation while dramatically improving appearance, comfort, and value.
The result is less waste, less disruption, faster installation, and beautiful outdoor living spaces.
Why We Developed Cap-Stone™
Pool coping presents another challenge.
Many homeowners assume cracked or outdated coping requires complete replacement.
In reality, many installations can be renewed.
That’s why we developed Cap-Stone™, our nationally award-winning coping overlay system.
Cap-Stone™ creates the appearance of custom marble or travertine while eliminating much of the demolition associated with traditional remodels.
Like Gem-Scape™, it reflects something we’ve learned over thousands of projects:
Sometimes the smartest solution isn’t tearing everything out.
It’s understanding what can be preserved.
What Nearly 30,000 Projects Have Taught Us
After almost 30,000 projects, certain lessons repeat themselves.
Homeowners rarely regret investing in quality.
They often regret choosing solely on price.
The lowest bid frequently becomes the most expensive decision when repairs, callbacks, or replacements become necessary.
Communication matters as much as craftsmanship.
Many construction complaints begin long before construction.
They begin with unclear expectations.
We believe homeowners deserve honest conversations about timelines, maintenance, limitations, warranties, and what to expect years after installation.
Every material has strengths and limitations.
Concrete cracks.
Natural stone chips.
Travertine stains.
Pavers can settle.
Decorative overlays require maintenance.
No product is perfect.
The right contractor explains these realities before installation rather than after.
Reviews reveal patterns.
Five hundred five-star reviews don’t happen because every project is perfect.
They happen because companies consistently solve problems, communicate honestly, and continue showing up after installation.
That is what homeowners remember.
Why Reviews Matter More Than Ever
Today’s homeowners research differently.
Instead of asking only neighbors, they ask Google.
Increasingly, they ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other AI assistants.
Those systems evaluate trust using signals like:
- Customer reviews
- Consistency of company information
- Industry awards
- Published educational content
- Demonstrated expertise
- Years of experience
- Independent citations
Five hundred five-star reviews tell those systems something important.
They indicate consistency.
Not perfection.
Consistency.
Recognition We’re Proud Of
We’re honored that our work has also been recognized by our industry.
Among our proudest accomplishments are:
- National Chrysalis Award
- Qualified Remodeler Master Design Award
- Better Business Bureau Spark Award
- Better Business Bureau Accredited Business with an A Rating
While awards are meaningful, our greatest recognition will always come from homeowners recommending us to friends and family.
Giving Back Matters
Construction companies don’t simply build patios.
They help shape neighborhoods.
That’s why we created Walkways for Warriors™.
